You can also climb the Sarlkofel from the Höhlensteintal valley. Starting point at Dobbiaco Lake ( 1,251 m) , ascent through the Sarlgraben to the Sarlsattel and continue on the described path to the summit, 3 ¾ hours, marked.

The Sarlkofel may be somewhat overshadowed by the much higher Dürrenstein, but that doesn't matter at all. In contrast to the much-visited "Stein", on the Sarlkofel you can still enjoy relative peace and quiet even on fine weather days, and the view from the peak rising close to the Pustertal valley is rich in atmospheric motifs. From the hotel, take the car or the bus in the direction of Bruneck to the "Prags" junction and continue to Bad Altprags, where the tour starts. This was mentioned as a "splendid bath for the limbs" as early as 1,700, but it has been dormant for decades. So there's no chance of a relaxing spa bath after the summit tour.... The path to the Sarlkofel leads from Bad Altprags ( 1,379 m) along the edge of the Kameriotwiesen meadows uphill towards the Sunnbichl, then steeply into a ditch to the Buchsenriedl ( 1,803 m). Behind the wooded saddle, the trail briefly descends to the Putzalm (1,743 m), where the path turns sharply right and climbs towards the Suesriedl (2,012 m). The hollow remains on the left, however; a shortcut trail leads directly to the rocky western flank of the Sarlriedel. At the Sarlsattel ( 2,229 m), the long southwest ridge of the summit is reached via harmless scree. At the junction turn left and follow the narrow, partly somewhat exposed path (wire ropes) in a gentle ascent to the east ridge and over it to the spacious summit of the Sarlkofel (2,378 m) with a panorama rich in contrasts. The view down to Lake Dobbiaco is thrilling. For the descent, take the path that leads from the Sarlsattel ( 2,189 m) southwards with a beautiful view of the peaks above the Höhlenstein valley in Sarlriedel ( 2,099 m). In the foreground you can see the jagged northern precipices of the Dürrenstein (2,839 m). From the wide meadow depression, a marked path leads down to the right into the Sarlwald forest, where you come across a forest track. Its loops can be shortened as needed. Finally, take the road across the Kameriotwiesen meadows back to Bad Altprags and by car or bus back to the hotel in Sesto/Moos.
