Cristallino di Misurina, 2775 m

They still exist, the (almost) white spots on the Dolomite map, and not only in the southern peripheral areas, even between Cortina d' Ampezzo and the Sesto Dolomites. In the Cristallo massif, for example, whose northern flank provides the postcard backdrop of Lake Dürren, which is admired and photographed again and again: on the right the Cima die Mezzo, in the middle Monte Cristallo ( 3,221 m ), flanked by Piz Popena, on the left a bizarrely jagged ridge. Highest point: the Cristallino di Misurina. Not a dream destination for the masses, but for those who like to hike off the beaten track, this is exactly the right place. From the hotel, take the car or the public bus to the bridge over the Rio Popena (on the road from Schluderbach to Misurina). The summit tour starts as a valley hike and leads from the road bridge ( 1,659 m) into the Val Popena Alta. The path is slippery in several places, which makes the ascent quite difficult; repeatedly you have to avoid the stream bed (cairns). Soon the Campanis de Popena (2,481 m) appear in the valley background, later the giant tower of the Piz Popena (3,152 m) comes into view, before another high cirque opens up on the right, the Val de le Baracche. Leave the marked path and follow the former military path, which climbs in a few hairpin bends before heading towards a debris gorge. The trail now goes up the wild gorge for a good quarter of an hour, then tracks (cairns) lead to the left into the southern flank of the Cristallino di Misurina. The old war path, which is only partially preserved, zigzags uphill. Fascinating scenery with the huge "lobster claw" of the Campanile Dibona as an eye-catcher. The striking Forcella Michele (2,590 m) remains on the left; past ruined shelters from the First World War, you gain the ridge and over it the summit of Cristallino di Misurina ( 2,775 m). Descent only on the ascent path.
