Beautiful view over the Piave Valley
You can also climb the panoramic mountain on two wheels via the old military road. Monte Tudaio is a real insider's tip: an "unknown" above the Piave Valley with an exciting climb, secured in sections, and a great panorama. The latter is dominated, of course, by the Sesto Dolomites, which for once show themselves from a rather unusual perspective - from the east. But the great show extends much further, to the main ridge of the Tauern (Großvenediger, 3666 m), to the three-thousand-metre peaks of Ampezzo and deep into the "terra incognita" of the Carnic Alps. However, you first have to earn the panoramic view: almost 1,300 metres in altitude, a steep ascent on the south side, so not for hot summer days. The start is from the hotel by car or public bus in the direction of the Kreuzberg Pass and from there on to Comelico and Laggio to the bar at the fork in the road above the hamlet of Pinié. A sign behind the bar points to the Sentiero dei Mede. The well-marked path leads into the woods, then to the right over the scree ditch of the Val dei Ciariè. After about half an hour, the path changes valley sides. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic; rock walls to the left, Monte Schiavon (2460 m) in the foreground. Inside the valley, the trail turns left and climbs with difficulty along a scree slope to a fork (signposts). Now under the rocks to the entrance of the Sentiero dei Mede (1440 m). It follows the rock-strewn, lightly wooded ridge between two wild scree gorges, looking for and finding a comparatively easy passage between rocks again and again. On several short passages, the route is secured with wire ropes; finally, you enter the extensive fortifications on Monte Tudaio (2410 m), which date back to the First World War, through a gate in the surrounding wall. Panels at the spacious summit explain the panorama. On the descent via the old war road, you leave the summit fortress through a tunnel, then you descend in 33 hairpin bends with a view of the Sesto Dolomites over the wooded western flank of the mountain. You cross the Val dei Ciariè at its mouth; a little later you reach the starting point of this beautiful loop.
